- [Course RC-0002: Recreation Center Membership](https://lifelonglearning.keene.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=1011349): Recreation Center Memberships Fall semester membership sign-ups are now available either online or at the front desk of the Recreation Center (cash or check only) KSC employees and spouses may purchase memberships to the Recreation Center.  See the Enroll/Pay Now section for the updated membership periods and fees.  KSC alumni and spouses may purchase memberships to the Recreation Center and the updated membership periods and fees are included in the Enroll/Pay Now section.  The alumni must purchase a membership for their spouse too. Annual memberships for employees will be available beginning in January and run January 1, 2027 - December 30, 2027; for alumni, 12 months from the time of purchase. You will be matched with your new personal trainer at that time.  We appreciate your patience & look forward to working with you! * Follow us on social @kscbodyworks and try one of our amazing Group Fitness classes! Our staff of Exercise Science students is always available at the 3 Floor BodyWorks desk to help with any questions you may have! Fee: $50 for a semester (Must be a KSC student or Rec Center facility member to participate) This fee includes 2 fitness assessments and weekly training sessions with your personal trainer. You will be matched with a personal trainer during the 3 rd week of the semester, and will hear from our staff member directly once assigned. Usually you will meet with your trainer once or twice a week and then continue your exercise plan on other days without your personal trainer. However, there is always a personal trainer on duty who can assist you in any way so please ask for our help. The theme of this year’s conference is Spanning the Globe: Thinking across Geographies in Medieval and Medievalism Studies. To register, select Add to Cart. - [Course NCOS-2015: OSHA #2015 Hazardous Materials](https://lifelonglearning.keene.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=1254704): This course covers OSHA General Industry Standards and other consensus and proprietary standards that relate to the use of hazardous materials. In this course, the functionality and interrelations of the laws, regulations and standards related to hazardous materials and the strategies for eliminating or reducing hazards associated with hazardous materials will be presented. In addition, the following topics relating to hazardous materials management and compliance will be discussed: compressed gases, acetylene, nitrous oxide, welding (and related operations), liquefied petroleum gases, flammable liquids, spray finishing, dipping and coating, cryogenics and refrigerated liquids, anhydrous ammonia, and high-risk operations (process safety, emergency response). - [Course NCOS-2045: OSHA #2045 Machinery and Machine Guarding Standards](https://lifelonglearning.keene.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=1254706): This course covers the various types of common machinery, machine safe guards, and related OSHA regulations and procedures. Guidance is provided on the hazards associated with various types of machinery and the determination of proper machine safe guards. Course topics include machinery processes, mechanical motions, points of operation, control of hazardous energy sources (lockout/tagout),common OSHA machine guarding violations, and guarding of portable powered tools, conveyors, and robotics. Course topics include hazards associated with crane assembly and disassembly, types of cranes, lifting concepts, rigging and wire rope, signaling, employee qualifications and training, and maintenance, repair, and inspection requirements. Students will participate in workshops to reinforce concepts of safe crane operation. - [Course NCOS-2255: OSHA #2255 Principles of Ergonomics](https://lifelonglearning.keene.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=1254712): This course covers use of ergonomic principles to recognize, evaluate, and control workplace conditions that cause or contribute to musculoskeletal and nerve disorders. Topics include: work physiology, anthropometry, musculoskeletal disorders, use of video display terminals, and risk factors such as vibration, temperature, and repetition, material handling, repetition, and lifting and transfers in health care. Course emphasis is on industrial case studies covering analysis and design of work stations and equipment workshops in manual lifting, and coverage of current OSHA compliance policies and guidelines. It will be useful to bring a calculator to class. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the ability to recognize work-related musculoskeletal and nerve disorders, assess employer’s ergonomic programs, and conduct ergonomic evaluations. - [Course NCOS-2264: OSHA #2264 Permit-Required Confined Space Entry](https://lifelonglearning.keene.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=1254714): Increase knowledge of hazards associated with permit-required confined space entry in general industry and construction.  Topics include : OSHA standards for confined space entry and the implementation in general industry 1910 and construction 1926;  hazards associated with confined space entry;  permits, procedures and written programs; roles and responsibilities of entrants, attendants and supervisors; personal protective equipment; ventilation and purging; appropriate atmospheric testing equipment and limitations; functional use and application of metering devices; and emergency procedures and confined space rescue requirements. Participants explore the use and limitations of explosion meters, oxygen meters and other test equipment, and learn the operation and calibration of gas monitoring equipment. - [Course NCOS-3015: OSHA #3015 Excavation, Trenching, and Soil Mechanics](https://lifelonglearning.keene.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=1254716): This course focuses on OSHA standards and on the safety aspects of excavation and trenching. Students are introduced to practical soil mechanics and its relationship to the stability of shored and unshored slopes and walls of excavations. Various types of shoring (wood timbers and hydraulic) are covered. Testing methods are demonstrated and a field exercise is typically conducted, allowing students to use instruments such as penetrometers, torvane shears, and engineering rods. Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the ability to assess employers’ compliance with the OSHA Excavation standard, and utilize soil testing methods to classify soil types, protective systems for excavation operations, and training requirements. Topics include: single- and three-phase systems, cord and plug-connected and fixed equipment, grounding, ground fault circuit interrupters, and safety-related work practices. - [Course NCOS-3115: OSHA #3115 Fall Protection](https://lifelonglearning.keene.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=1254722): OSHA’s course on fall protection/fall prevention covers OSHA’s fall protection standards, and policies in construction and non-construction, plus an overview of fall protection methods and best practices.  Course topics include but are not limited to: principles of fall protection, components and limitations of fall arrest systems, workshops demonstrating the inspection and usage of fall protection equipment, residential construction fall protection, training requirements and the process and risk strategies involved in creating and evaluating a fall protection program.  Students participate in lively discussion and exercises/small group workshops.  Upon successful completion, students have the ability to assess compliance with OSHA Fall Protection standards, evaluate installed passive systems and fall arrest systems, and develop and implement fall protection plans.  Additional topics include: 29 CFR 1926 Subpart M, Sample Fall Protection plans, Consensus standards and summaries, fall hazard analysis, fall accidents and fatalities, litigation decisions, “What’s NEW in OSHA” relative to fall protection. - [Course NCOS-500: OSHA #500 Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the Construction Industry](https://lifelonglearning.keene.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=1254724): This course is designed for those interested in teaching the 10- and 30-hour construction safety and health outreach program to their employees and other interested groups. Special emphasis is placed on those topics that are required in the 10- and 30-hour programs as well as on those that are the most hazardous, using OSHA standards as a guide. Course participants are briefed on effective instructional approaches and the effective use of visual aids and handouts. This course allows the student to become a trainer in the Outreach Program and to conduct both a 10- and 30-hour construction safety and health course and to issue cards to participants verifying course completion. Note:   Students in Course 500 who wish to participate as authorized trainers in the OSHA Outreach Training Program must prepare a presentation on an assigned OSHA Construction Industry topic and pass a closed book examination. Authorized OSHA Construction Outreach Trainers are required to attend Course 502 at least once every four (4) years to maintain their outreach program trainer status. This full-day course incorporates extensive hands-on training for the “Competent Person” who will be managing fall safety, and is based on the requirements of the US OSHA 1910 and 1926 regulations, and the current ANSI/ASSP Z359.2 and ANSI/ISEA 121 standards. Demonstrations, tours, and activities will cover fall protection equipment selection and inspections, anchor points, positioning systems, passive systems, active systems, leading edges, dropped object prevention, MEWPs, suspension trauma, fallen worker rescue and retrieval, and unique engineered systems. When work is performed on elevated surfaces, effective protection against falls must be provided. - [Course NCSH-433: Developing an Effective Emergency Operations Plan](https://lifelonglearning.keene.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=1254846): This course is designed for the new or experienced health care emergency manager. OSHA requires your facility to have emergency preparedness and action plans (29 CFR 1910.38) and to communicate those plans in writing, if you employ more than 10 workers. The plans must encompass any type of emergency: fire, weather, attack, threat, etc. The plan must include, at a minimum, the following: •   emergency escape procedures and escape routes •   procedures for employees who remain to perform or shut down critical office operations •   procedures to account for all employees after the completion of an emergency evacuation •   rescue and medical duties for those employees who are to perform them •   the preferred means for reporting fires and other emergencies •   the names or regular job titles of persons or departments you need to contact for further information or explanation of duties under the plan. - [Course NCSH-444: Managing Biological Hazards in The Workplace](https://lifelonglearning.keene.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=1254864): Biological safety is the application of basic industrial hygiene principles to the workplace to prevent occupational diseases caused by biological agents. These diseases include infections, allergies, intoxications and inflammation of the lungs as target organs and as a route of entrance into the body. This survey course will identify industries and jobs that expose workers to bioaerosols of bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, pollen and organic dusts such as grains, wood, flour, compost, wastewater and cotton. The student will learn to recognize industrial processes that produce bioaerosols e.g. high pressure washing or amplify infectious agents e.g. cooling towers and stagnant water sources. In the US, 22 million workers are exposed to hazardous noise intensities. An effective written hearing protection program includes policies and procedures for noise monitoring, employee training, selection and use of hearing protection devices, equipment and facility noise reduction engineering, and audiometric testing. There are significant differences between occupational exposure limits established by OSHA and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). - [Course NCSH-470: Electrical Safe Work Practices](https://lifelonglearning.keene.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=1254892): This one day course presents necessary information that qualified electrical workers need to know to work safely with electrical equipment and highlights the latest changes to 2021 NFPA 70E® “Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace.” We will discuss the increased emphasis risk and hazard categories with supporting group activities and interaction.  We will have electrical personal protective equipment to demonstrate, and discuss the importance of conducting an arc flash hazard analysis.  Important changes to NFPA 70E® will include requirements to perform a Job Safety Plan, clarification in tables with new notes to outline device clearing time and use of rubber gloves with protectors as arc flash hand protection, and a new requirement for investigating every electrical mishap. As loggers use their tools and equipment, they are dealing with massive weights and irresistible momentum of falling, rolling, and sliding trees and logs. The hazards are even more acute when dangerous environmental conditions are factored in, such as uneven, unstable or rough terrain; inclement weather including rain, snow, lightning, winds, and extreme cold and/or remote and isolated work sites where health care facilities are not immediately accessible. The combination of these hazards present a significant risk to employees working in logging operations throughout the country, regardless of the type of timber being logged, where it is logged or the end use of the wood. This two day course is designed for people who have basic knowledge of Chainsaws. Students will learn all aspects of hazards associated with the use of chainsaws and manual felling operations to include overview of OSHA’s Logging Standard and Regional Emphasis Program, Equipment Maintenance, proper use of PPE, Manual Felling techniques, Overhead Hazards, Specific Work Procedures and much more. 1 will consist of in-class learning. The 2025 Summer Institute will feature experts from Yahad - In Unum, the organization founded by Father Patrick Desbois, author of  Holocaust By Bullets . Educators who attend this 2.5-day institute will learn about Yahad - In Unum’s investigative work pertaining to the fate of Jewish communities and other targeted groups in the former Soviet Union. Sessions will: focus on eyewitness testimonies and how these can be used to enhance students’ critical thinking skills, introduce educational tools and pedagogy (including a ready-made case study) for use in the classroom, and teach about connections to present mass crimes. The final half-day of the Institute will highlight resources and programs available through the Cohen Center to support teachers. Educators who participate in the Institute will earn 20 hours of Continuing Education credit and receive teaching resources, including flash drives with two study guides, video excerpts from eyewitness testimonies, books, and other resources. Breakfasts, lunches, and coffee breaks are provided throughout the Institute. This is a residential program that includes three nights of housing on campus.  The final day of the workshop will be a half day.  A full schedule for the Summer Institute will be provided to attendees prior to their arrival on campus.   Registration fees are non-refundable and non-transferable. - [Course NCSH-251: Safety Management System](https://lifelonglearning.keene.edu/search/publicCourseSearchDetails.do?method=load&courseId=4183883): You will learn how to develop your own Safety Management System from using 3 tools included in most office environments.  We will step through the process of building a form to collect data, a spreadsheet to store the data, and the automation to make it all work.  We will discuss use cases, common pitfalls, and use cases for different processes. Examples of process that can be deployed include: building a learning management system (LMS), incident tracking, safety inspections, PPE request form, requests for training, if you have a paper form, you can automate it. During the course we will use the online OSHA 300 log as an exercise by setting it up to store the data from being entered into a Microsoft Form.  These basic steps are the building blocks to other processes.  After this exercise is completed and students have the basic knowledge, we will illicit the next task from the class to build with the remaining time.

This workshop explores how to foster a classroom environment where students feel safe engaging with complex, often traumatic histories while also being challenged to think critically and ethically.    Specifically, the workshop will cover how choice-driven and project-based learning can be effectively used to meet the needs of students with varying learning styles and abilities. By incorporating flexibility in how students engage with complex material, educators can help students access and process emotionally challenging content in a way that is meaningful and empowering. Educators will also explore how to balance the delivery of difficult histories with strategies to support the emotional wellness of both themselves and their students by creating intentional spaces for reflection. A Case Study on Justice and Peacebuilding in Bosnia and Herzegovina Friday, March 27, 2026 from 8:30 am – 3:00 pm (in person at Keene State College)   How do countries and communities’ function in the wake of atrocities? In societies where neighbors persecuted neighbors, is there hope for peace, justice, and reconciliation? In this workshop for educators, we’ll explore these questions in a case study of events in Bosnia and Herzegovina in the early 1990s, when citizens experienced war, siege, ethnic cleansing, and genocide. Using maps, timelines, video clips, and other materials created by the Educator’s Institute for Human Rights (EIHR) to accompany the acclaimed book,  Imagine: Reflections on Peace , teachers will leave with deeper understanding of these events, along with classroom-ready lesson plans and a copy of the book. Two of the core questions to be addressed in this workshop are: What is the role of photography in conflict and peace? How are individual stories shaped by historical events and international response in times of conflict?    Learning Outcomes : At the end of these lessons, teachers and their students will be able to: Describe the interrelatedness of historical events, individual stories, and the international response in Bosnia and Herzegovina,  Describe the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina from multiple perspectives and various groups,  Evaluate and analyze the role of photography in conflict and peace,  Determine the unique perspectives on peace (in a post-conflict society).  Preparation for the Workshop : Before coming to this workshop, please be sure you are familiar with the  IHRA Guidelines   and the  USHMM Guidelines for Teaching the Holocaust , especially the  Rationale and Learning Objectives .  EIHR has developed the lessons we will be discussing with these resources in mind.    This workshop will take place fully in-person on campus at Keene State. Breakfast, lunch, and workshop materials are provided to participants at no cost. Participants will work directly with the KSC coaching staff and players though fun, high-tempo drills that simulate a KSCFH practice. Following the clinic, we encourage all participants and their families to stay and watch the Owls compete in an LEC matchup against UMass Dartmouth! Admission to the game is free. Go Owls!. Clinic Details: Day: Saturday, September 19, 2026 Time:  11:00-12:30pm Location: Owl Athletic Complex (110 Krif Rd, Keene, NH) Ages: Grades 9-12 Cost: $60 per participant Equipment: Please bring your own field hockey specific equipment (stick, turf shoes, shinpads, mouthguard, etc.) as well as reversible pinnie and water bottle.
