Notes

The US decision to invade Iraq in early 2003 was a critical inflection point for US Foreign Policy in the post-Cold War era. By launching a war of choice under suspect circumstances, Washington set in motion a sequence of unintended consequences that would subordinate our nation’s foreign policy establishment to the ever-expanding “Global War on Terror.” As a result, over the following 15 years, America’s International engagement drifted dangerously out of balance, with far too few resources focused on effective soft power tools such as diplomacy and development. Please join Bob Beck as he explains how and why the Iraq war derailed our foreign policy focus and how we can get back on track. Student participation will be strongly encouraged and the class will be recorded.

Special Note: This is a four-week class, starting on Friday, 7 April, ending Friday, 28 April.

The annual cyclical migration of birds is one of natures great wonders. In New England, the late spring brings with it the largest push of neo tropic and South American migratory birds back on their way to their breeding grounds. Along with an increase in avian biodiversity, bird song and bright colored plumage are a highlight of spring for naturalists and bird enthusiasts alike. Join me for this one off spring installment of “Birds Return” to look more deeply at the wonders of spring migration and learn how we can better experience these feathered friends while they are around.

Taught by: Will Stollsteimer

Birding has been a part of my life from a young age. Many members of my family are birders and I grew up with many opportunities to experience and observe birds. I have been birding out in nature for as long as I can remember and when I began my masters degree studying environmental science at Antioch University, this passion intensified. I am currently working in partnership with the Harris Center for Conservation Education to install American Kestrel nest boxes across the Monadnock Region to help protect a declining species.

Notes

Come join us for an afternoon of watercolor painting at the Keene State College Camp. We will be painting at picnic tables under the pavilion. The date is June 9th from 1:00 to 4:00, rain or shine. The class can accommodate 20 students.

The camp overlooks beautiful Wilson Pond. If you would like to paint plein air, looking out at a section of the pond, surrounding trees, plants, etc, you will be able to do so. I won’t be doing my demo plein air because the picnic tables all have different vantage points, and I’m concerned some won’t have a suitable view. Instead, I will be doing a demo and providing everyone with a photo reference of the subject (to be decided). After my demo, I will assist both those working plein air and those working from the photo reference.

This is for all levels, but you will need to have had some watercolor experience and your own supplies. There is a sink for filling your water containers. Be sure to bring a board to place your paper on.
