CC-28 - Approaching Genocide in the Classroom: Case Studies and Seminars
Course Description
Feeling overwhelmed with the task of teaching genocide in the classroom? Would you like to have a sample course progression provided to you with explanation and experience with some of the activities you can use immediately in the classroom? Join us for a day of collaboration, practical application of material, and exploration through different genocide education materials. This interactive and discussion-based workshop will be led by two NH teachers who currently teach Holocaust and Genocide Studies courses at their schools. Some of the workshop materials to be discussed include: the Pyramid of Hate, 10 Stages of Genocide, 4 Roles in an Atrocity, Maus I and Maus II. The workshop will touch on a wide range of different cases of genocide such as the Holocaust, the Armenian Genocide, the Bosnian Genocide, and the Genocide against the Tutsi (in Rwanda). Tom White from the Cohen Center will also introduce some of the resources available to educators through the Center.

Katie Littlefield is a Social Studies Teacher at Pinkerton Academy.
Kelly Giguere is an English Teacher at Londonderry High School.

Learner Outcomes
- Participants will learn multiple frameworks for teaching about genocide.
- Participants will discuss resources and activities on the Holocaust and other genocides that have been successful in the classroom.
- Participants will leave the workshop with specific ideas for lesson plans, assignments, or other elements that they can introduce to their middle school, high school, or college classes.
