CC-1055 - Workshop for Educators: Teaching About the Nazis’ LGBTQ+ Victims
Course Description
In this workshop, award-winning historian and educator Dr. Jake Desai-Newsome will equip educators with the knowledge and tools they need to confidently teach about how and why the Nazi regime targeted LGBTQ+ people during the era of the Holocaust. The session will include a lecture that provides an overview of the history, an introduction to original educational resources created by experts at the Pink Triangle Legacies Project including a primary source activity for the classroom, and a forum for participants to discuss challenges and opportunities of teaching this topic. Participants will receive exclusive access to digital educator resource packets curated by the Pink Triangle Legacies Project.
Outcomes: Educators who participate in this workshop will:
Agenda: 8:30 am – Breakfast 9:00 am – Welcome & Introductions 9:10 am – Presentation + Q&A: Enemies of the State: The Nazi Persecution of LGBTQ+ People 10:10 am – Introduction to the Pink Triangle Legacies Project’s (PTLP) Educator Resources 10:30 am – Tracing LGBTQ+ Lives in Nazi Germany: A Primary Source Activity 11:15 am – Discussion Forum: Best Practices, Challenges, and Opportunities 11:35 am – From Theory to Practice: In groups, attendees brainstorm and discuss ways they could use PTLP resources in their classroom, and then share out to the full group 12:00 pm – Lunch and social time (workshop will conclude after this at 1:00 pm)
Please note that this workshop is intended for active classroom teachers only. If you do not teach at the middle school, high school, or college level, please email coheninstitute@keene.edu to ask if there is space to accommodate your participation.
This workshop will take place fully in-person on campus at Keene State. Breakfast, lunch, and workshop materials are provided to participants at no cost. Workshop attendees will receive a certificate of completion listing the number of professional development hours completed.
