This workshop is focused on understanding how money moves around within a nonprofit organization and how financial information can aid in decision making. We begin with a basic exploration of financial statements and setting financial objectives with the goal of using financial statements to tell the story of the organization and communicate with the many stakeholders within the organization. We will then move onto budgets and how to create budgets that can be used as tools to track progress and performance while also telling the story of the program or organization as it seeks funding. Participants will work with budget templates and templates for basic budget tracking.

All nonprofits are faced with the challenge of managing boards. Nonprofit managers need to understand the role of the board and the many types of boards that exist. This workshop will explore the nature of governance and the fiduciary responsibility of the board while also evaluating the different types of boards and how one model over another may help or hinder an organization. Participants will develop a board description and skills matrix to help them better understand their own board and its role in the organization.
